As the minor league season winded down, I looked for a final opportunity to see a “fireworks” game. We settled on an overnight trip to eastern Iowa to see the Kane County Cougars take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field on Friday, August 30.

Cedar Rapids tied its record high temperature from 1953, reaching 100 degrees in late afternoon. Temperatures dropped a bit from their peak, but even when we arrived in the top of the third inning, it was 94 degrees with a triple-digit heat index.

Sitting in the second row gave both kids a chance to be featured on the big screen — including a bit where Noah was playing a sort of hide and seek game with the cameraman. The kids and I toured the concourse, and we went through a few bottles of discounted water over the course of the game.

The fireworks show at the end was enjoyable, as was another stop at Lincoln Cafe for lunch the following day.

Noah's last trip to Lincoln Cafe was our lunch on August 31, 2013.
