After a morning which featured a trip to the Des Moines Farmer’s Market and Noah’s penultimate Wee-Ball game in Altoona, we headed east on Interstate 80 to New Sharon’s Capri Theatre for the world premiere of “Mother’s Day 2014” to an exclusive audience including our family plus Grandma Mac, Grandpa Mac, and Gee Gee.

While some technical difficulties delayed the premiere by more than twenty minutes, the extra time allowed for plenty of photos in front of the quaint theatre, where the Now Showing case featured the movie poster designed specifically for the premiere event. It also allowed for fresh-popped popcorn, pop, and candy to be distributed to the audience prior to the movie’s start.

After a handful of trailers, the feature presentation began, with the 15-minute Mother’s Day video composed of clips from 2010 to 2014 along with new video from Noah and audio from Emmie. The movie was followed by a compilation of some favorite films from the past few years, including Emmie’s Sweet Child of Mine compilation and Noah’s Rollerskating montage.

Watching our favorite family videos and the Mother’s Day premiere on the Capri Theatre’s top-notch digital screen made for a fun outing; perhaps the biggest single takeaway was our Emmie’s newfound love of popcorn. After exhausting Mommy’s bag, she shifted to my lap for a few handfuls from my popcorn bucket.

We took the backroads to Newton before a stop at Moo’s BBQ, a new restaurant which popped up on the square a few months ago. The pulled pork was solid, particularly when paired with their signature sweet but semi-smoky sauce.
