It’s approximately 22:00 Dublin time as we sit in the waiting area outside our gate at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Amanda is ninety pages into The Time Traveler’s Wife, while I’ve been rereading parts of Rick Steves’ Ireland so we’re prepared for our first day of activities.
After we pick up our rental car from the Dublin Airport, we’ll be leaving the city for the medieval Irish town of Kilkenny. Steves describes Kilkenny as being “salt of the earth Ireland,” a “small town with a big history.” We’ll primarily be stopping for lunch (at Kytler’s Inn), but we’ll also check out the large castle that anchors the town.
After that, it’s rural roads to the Rock of Cashel historic site, anchored by a Gothic-style cathedral built between 1230 and 1290. We’ll be exploring the site and snapping some photos, then driving to Dingle, where we will spend two nights. Hopefully we’ll arrive at a reasonable time so we can check into our guest house and grab a late supper at the Blue Zone Jazz and Pizza Bar.
What time did you guys end up taking off?
We finally left the runway around 8:30 (Des Moines time.) We ended up in Dublin about an hour late, around 9:25. Our bags were there, though, so that was good at least!
