It was a windy walk from the hotel to the car this morning, a sign of things to come when we arrived at Peggys Cove, home of Nova Scotia’s most famous lighthouse. Located at the point where St. Margarets Bay joins the Atlantic Ocean, the rocky coastline by the lighthouse took the wind level up a notch. We all made it from the car to the lighthouse, but Amanda soon retreated with Eilidh to get her out of the cold and wind.

Amanda and Eilidh can be seen leaning against the lighthouse to reduce wind exposure.

Emmie navigated the uneven rocks surrounding the lighthouse for a few minutes with Gee Gee, Noah, and me, but ultimately decided she’d rather go back to the van too. So, Gee Gee took Emmie to the van with Eilidh and sent Amanda back to explore with Noah and me. Noah loved the adventure of hiking the rocks, leading the way at times hiking between the craggy shoreline.

Despite the cool temperature and high winds, the view from Peggys Cove was impressive. We spent a little time perusing the tourist shops around the lighthouse before continuing to our lunch spot.

Lunch today was at Rhubarb, highlighted by our Lonely Planet guide as one of the best in the area. We started with a mussels appetizer, of which I consumed all but about three mussels; Gee Gee and Amanda each had one, while Emmie tried the tiniest portions of two after much consternation. The accompanying French fries, however, received much love.

For entrees, I had the first Lobster roll on our vacation; Amanda placed the first order of fish and chips; Gee Gee ordered a kale Caesar salad, but ended up sharing the salad (and fish) with Amanda for variety. The kids had mini-pizzas, though they didn’t live up to the excellent pizzas the night before.

After a busy morning, we scrapped a planned museum visit from our afternoon itinerary. Amanda, Gee Gee, Noah, and Eilidh went straight to the hotel room when we returned to Halifax, but I convinced Emmie to join me on a mini-walk to the (relatively) nearby Scotia Square Mall. We perused the small selection of stores and of course placed our order at the mall’s Starbucks.

Amanda shows 10 fingers to celebrate our 10th anniversary, in our Halifax hotel room.

Gee Gee generously agreed to watch the kids on a couple of occasions during our trip, the first being Friday night in Halifax, which coincided with our tenth anniversary. Amanda and I made the 15-minute walk to Chives Canadian Bistro; we were impressed with the appetizers, Amanda liked her haddock, but I was underwhelmed with my flank steak entree. While it may not have been the most memorable meal we’ve ever eaten, it was still a great night out.

With the kids winding down, I drove to Sweet Hereafter, a dessert restaurant serving an array of gourmet cheesecakes. I picked up three (Kit Kat, Marble, and Peanut Butter Cup) and returned to the hotel room to share with Amanda and Gee Gee.
