We checked out of the Westin Chicago Lombard at 10:00 a.m. with a 4-and-a-half hour drive ahead. Our only stop was in Davenport, where we exited the Interstate for lunch at Portillo’s, for a second round of Chicago-style hot dogs. The restaurant was absolutely packed, so we opted for the chaotic drive-thru line. Fifteen minutes later, we had five hot dogs, two fries, and two orders of Coke, which didn’t translate quite as well in the car as when we ate them in the restaurant eight days earlier. After a stop at the gas station and Starbucks, we were on the road and home by mid-afternoon.
