Every time I visit New York, I try to eat something with avocado for breakfast at Black Star Coffee. This trip was no exception, so I walked a few blocks to get a to-go order that included avocado toast, avocado, egg, and cheese croissants, and French toast for the girls. I enjoyed my meal but the rest of the family was less enthusiastic. After breakfast, they were happy to resume their day including homework and more playing with new-to-them toys.

The girls split French toast from Black Star.

Eilidh loved playing with a new array of toys!

Lunch for the kids was at another favorite place of mine, Petey’s Burgers. Noah ordered his go-to bacon cheeseburger, I went with the BLT with extra bacon, and the girls each opted for grilled cheese sandwiches. Amanda wanted more birria tacos from her newfound-favorite food truck, so we picked those up before returning to our Long Island City home.

Eilidh found a roly-poly bug on our walk to Petey’s.

Dinner was pizza from Slice, which the kids ate with my friend and Neapolitan Labs colleague Stephanie, who watched them for the night. Before we left, we sampled some of the Kraft Mac & Cheese ice cream I’d ordered the night before via Doordash. We all thought it tasted fine but between our family and Stephanie, we ate less than half of the pint.

The kids demolished the cheese pizza from Slice, eating all but one of the giant pieces.

Amanda and I went into the city, where I picked up dinner from the famous Keens Chophouse amidst a torrential downpour. The meal was excellent, even when eaten in a hotel room. We rounded out the evening with a delivery of chocolate chip cookies from Levain bakery.

Even equipped with an umbrella, the short walk from the hotel to Keens Chophouse left my shoes and clothes soaked.

Heavy rains continued throughout the night, and the first-ever Flash Flood Emergency was issued for the New York City area. We spent a few minutes watching the late local news and were fortunate the area around the hotel and Long Island City were not impacted by the floods.
